This Week’s Life Lesson: June 25, 2023

Today was my first day out on the golf course, ever. I started taking lessons in April after years of wanting to. Self-doubt and a lack of prioritizing allowed me to think for years and not take action.

When I started taking lessons, Justin the instructor was quick to let me know that I was better than almost any beginner he’s seen, that I had natural abilities, and that I was going to do just fine with a few lessons.

I missed out on years of the sport because I was terrified to suck at it long enough to learn how to be good enough to enjoy it. (Just in case you’re wondering, the golf course today humbled me pretty well. I wouldn’t say I sucked, but I definitely wasn’t great).

To paint a good picture - I showed up without balls or clubs, knocked my head off of the cart while getting in, forgot my tee at the tee box more times than I can count, and slid around enough times in the cart that my boss (and golf partner today) said he’s going to get me a seat belt/ They key thing? I went out there not knowing what to expect and tackled something new.

It is so easy to fall into familiar routines as adults, but there is great value in stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing new experiences. Trying new things not only enriches our lives but also helps us develop new skills, expand our horizons, and cultivate a sense of fulfillment. A few reasons why we should absolutely be pursuing new things on a consistent basis as an adult:

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery

Trying new things challenges us to explore different interests, strengths, and weaknesses, allowing us to learn more about ourselves in the process. Whether it's taking up a new hobby, learning a musical instrument, or attempting a new sport, each new experience provides an opportunity for self-reflection, self-improvement, and the discovery of hidden talents.

Expanding Perspectives and Breaking Stereotypes

When we stick to what we know, it's easy to develop a narrow perspective of the world around us. Trying new things broadens our horizons and exposes us to different cultures, ideas, and perspectives. By immersing ourselves in diverse experiences, we break free from stereotypes, challenge preconceived notions, and foster a greater understanding and empathy for others. This openness to new experiences leads to personal growth and helps build a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Overcoming Fear and Building Resilience

Trying something new often comes with a certain degree of fear or apprehension. However, pushing past our comfort zones and embracing new challenges helps us develop resilience. As adults, we may fear failure or the unknown, but these experiences provide valuable opportunities for personal development. The process of trying new things teaches us to confront our fears, persevere through adversity, and bounce back from setbacks. Over time, we become more resilient and better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Preventing Stagnation and Boredom

Life can easily become monotonous if we stick to the same routines day after day. Trying new things injects a sense of excitement and novelty into our lives, preventing stagnation and boredom. Engaging in new activities stimulates our minds, sparks creativity, and reignites our passion for life. Whether it's exploring new cuisines, traveling to unfamiliar destinations, or attending workshops and seminars, the pursuit of new experiences keeps us engaged, energized, and motivated.

Developing New Skills and Enhancing Cognitive Abilities

Every new endeavor presents an opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Trying new things as an adult allows us to expand our knowledge base and enhance our cognitive abilities. Engaging in intellectual pursuits such as learning a new language, studying a subject of interest, or taking up a new instrument can improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. These skills not only benefit us personally but can also have a positive impact on our professional lives.

Building Confidence and Boosting Self-Esteem

Accomplishing something new, no matter how big or small, instills a sense of confidence and boosts self-esteem. As adults, trying new things and achieving personal milestones reinforces our belief in our abilities and reminds us that growth and success are possible at any age. Each new experience serves as a building block, empowering us to face future challenges with a positive mindset and a belief in our own capabilities.

This week I encourage you to pick one new thing to try. It doesn’t have to be grand, big, cost money, or be extravagant. It could be a new class at your local gym, downloading Duo Lingo to learn a new language, journaling for the first time, or finally signing up for crocheting class. Whatever you choose, put any self-doubt or excuses to not go or to not try and just jump in. I promise, you won’t regret it.
